Week 16

And it's down to the last week of the year.  Not much movement this week in the rankings.  This is more common with week to week changes this late in the year.  The volatile New England shift up and down isn't the norm when there is an entire season of data that holds the average in place.  By now a team is what it is, it's hard to have one performance that will significantly change a teams position.

Red teams are in.  Blue teams are in as of now.  And Green teams are still in the mix but out as of now.

Seattle has made a monster run up the charts in the past few weeks.  They were 17th in week seven.  But huge scores and holding solid offenses in check will do much to improve the status of a team.

Really Indianapolis seems to be the only pretender of the season benefiting from the easiest schedule in football.  With the 30th ranked defense it has been smoke, mirrors and emotion.

It would be something if Minnesota makes in in over the Bears who have had the best defense in the league for most of the season.  This sort of display just supports my assertion that QB cannot be overstated.  Cutler just hasn't ever been a winner.

One more week to cap off the season.  Teams are pretty much set, but the final positions will be settled.

Merry Christmas.

Week 15

Just two more weeks left in our season and the Browns are finally out of it.

The level of QB play has really improved over the last year.  Young quarterbacks on San Francisco, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Seattle and Washington makes the near term look very good indeed.  As has always been the case, football is driven by the QB.  Just look at the top ten and bottom ten teams.

All of the top ten have top or second tier QBs.  One could argue the Cutler (CHI) and Schaub (HOU) are two that fall into the third tier.  But they also play on teams that are well rounded.  And both have shown some ability to play at a very high level.

Now compare those players to the bottom ten.  Except for Detroit, the bottom ten are filled with teams desperate to find the right field commander.

Never underestimate the value of a QB, and never hesitate to upgrade that position.  I'm not calling for the replacement of Weeden just yet.  But I will say that if the new leaders of the Browns feel that they have a better player in mind.  Go get him.

As for the Browns; when the chips were on the line, it was the rookie from Michigan State who stepped up and looked like the experienced veteran.  I worry that Weeden was a failure in baseball because of his makeup more than his physical ability.  This would mean that he never will be able to excel at the highest level.  The silver lining is that this should put to rest the whole "Shurmer has earned another year" nonsense.  Hopefully the Browns can finish out the year playing strong against the Broncos and closing the door on the Steelers.  It would be a nice change if they could end another teams season rather than be their stepping stone.

The bottom line this week, the Browns showed up to try to make the opponent beat them through the air... and their opponent did.  Containment of the Redskin running game was pretty solid, but they had no answer for a smart young, mobile QB who was coached up to play at a high level.  Cousins made few mistakes and never the really big one.  It reminded me of some of Andy Dalton's games from a year ago.  I just hope that Cousins gets a chance to play somewhere and get a full time shot.

Maybe in Cleveland.

That's right.  Tom Brady and Payton Manning are united again on the two best teams in the NFL.

What's more interesting is that the dismantling of a top ten defense by the Patriots has catapulted them from fourth to first.

But you may ask, "But how could you put them at first if they have such a low rated defense?"

Well my first answer is that I didn't decide on the final rankings specifically at all.  I created a system by which I plug in weekly stats and the model computes the rest.  My subjective biases are all within the model when weighting the importance of one stat versus another.  My biases are not based on week to week impressions of bits and pieces of game highlights.  Everything is, "just the stats ma'am".

But you may then ask, "But how could your lousy system make such a blunder by placing the Patriots ahead of two arguably better balanced teams with equal or better records?  You must have some offensive bias.  Yes that must be it.  You set up a model where the offense is more important so that you can downgrade the Steelers rankings."

Certainly anyone who knows my feelings on the Steelers would agree that this theory has some face validity.

But my reply would be: My system is operating just fine thank you.  And I'll ignore that snarky comment and point out that the Patriots so dominate the offensive categories that they overwhelm all other categories of measurement.  I weight overall offense and defense score equally in the power ranking.

Never since the perfect Patriots team of 2007 has a team so dominated a side of the ball.  The Patriots have a perfect score on offense.  The next ranked offense (of the Detroit Lions) is 25% less in its score value.

To remind everyone, the one thing I do with all the scores is what I call a normalization process.  I take all the differing measurements and distill them down into a like number.  It's a way to take apples and oranges and make them comparable for this exercise.  Additionally the normalization process doesn't just sort out and standardize the scores for different categories, it also allows for the distribution of the data to reflect through to the final ranking.  It allows for just this case where one team has a large lead on the next competitor.  In many ranking systems people just rank the offense on 1 to 32.  It implies that each step down is equal.  That the difference between the first and second team is the same difference as between the 30th and 31st.  But in a real application of statistical measurement this may or may not be the case.

Which it isn't in this one.  It almost never is the case that data is evenly distributed.  That's the thing they don't really talk about in Urban Planning statistic classes.

To put this dominance in another light.   The difference between the number one Chicago defense and the number two San Francisco defense is only 5%.

On the bright side the Browns have clawed their way into mediocrity.  Yea!

I still want Shurmer canned.

Cheers!

Week 13

And here we are at the end of 13 weeks.

Nothing too new here.  Cleveland's less than dominating (statistical) performance against the worst defense in the league didn't help their case.
