NFL - Week 16

So I missed a few weeks, but here I am to check in with the current power ranks on the NFL.

The interesting thing I find when I compare my list to other ranking systems is that my methodology takes into account the entire body of work for the season.  Where many opinion based rankings rank the teams based on which team is playing the best football currently, my system takes into account all games played regardless of any other factors or changes to the team.

My ranks give you a rank based on a formula that takes into account many statistics and opponents over the course of the year.  Is it better?  Not at all.  You have to know what the data is trying to tell you to know if it's useful to you.  Some guys ranks is completely dependent on that guys personal knowledge of each team in the league.  He's making a rank based on whatever amount of tape he's seen or not.  And raw box score data (hopefully).  And whatever other bias about a team or player may interfere.  We all have them.

But with a model to develop ranks I place my biases into what statistics I believe are important for a teams success and let the numbers fall where they may.

So where are they falling today?

New England has cemented its place at the top for several weeks now.  However, just like last year, Seattle has moved up the charts and is a whisper behind in the model.  Really we forget how mediocre the Seahawks were early last year.  It's starting to look like a trend.  However this is a better trend than starting hot and ending lukewarm.

Of course my Browns continue to slide in their spiral of self-loathing destruction into another offseason of quarterback talk.  The reality being that neither fellow is a viable contender as an elite slinger.  Hell Manziel doesn't even look like a viable contender of being this generations Doug Flutie.

And while I like Hoyer's presence and general intangibles, he hasn't the physical gifts to back them up.  Perhaps his best comparison is a fellow we knew in this town, Don Strok (no relation and also the only Browns QB to never lose a start).

So here we are back to the old debate.  I find it hard to imagine that the team will go out and make a deal to get a hold of a top QB prospect this year.  The safe move is to give the kid another eight games minimum to really prove that he has no ability to play in this league.  But the smart move is to go out and get a player you think is better.  It's never a bad idea to upgrade at that position.  All I need to say is Terry Hanratty. 

One more week of fun and it's all mercifully over.  The recovering will never end...

NCAA - Final Four

Ohio State laid a beat down on another ranked team like they were playing a Division 1-AA school in week one of the season as a final tune up before the big non-conference game.  It was such a monster beat down against a top forty defense it catapulted the Buckeyes from the fourth ranked team at the time to the first.  Not only that but the first overall offense. 

I'd like to take this moment to remind you all that I'm not really an Ohio State fan.  Sure I'd rather see them win than not, but I'm really a Cincinnati Bearcat, and as anyone knows who has actually been a Bearcat; we really don't like Ohio State to terribly much. 

Anyway, my football ranking at the (almost) end of the college season is about as good as I could ask. The top four on my list should also be the top four in the playoff.

1-Ohio State
2-TCU
3-Oregon
4-Alabama

All four teams have exceptionally good statistics.  All four teams have played well throughout the season.  Now as to Florida State, except for having the best record in college football; Florida State doesn't stack up with the other top tier teams.  With that said, I'm certain they will end up winning the whole thing again.

College football is a funny thing.  Now that we know who and what and where, we have to wait a month before we get to have some closure on the season.

NFL - Week 13

And the NFL is rounding third and coming down the home stretch.  The Browns recent struggles have let them slide from a high at 12 back down to 18.  Meanwhile the actually good teams are hitting their stride.  Oddly enough after slow starts we see Brady, Rodgers, Wilson and Manning at the top of the list this week.  And Arizona dropping like a rock (they were number two just last week).

Gritty KC, Miami and Detroit all are still surprisingly high with Baltimore and Indy rounding out the top tier for now.  I can see Arizona falling out the top ten with their QB woes and another usually strong team filling in.  Cinti, San Fran and San Diego all are teams experienced with either a strong QB or Coach.  So it will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

College - Week 14

Interestingly enough Alabama's big win was rewarded with being bounced out of the top spot.  Although Alabama would still be in my Final Four:

Ohio State
Alabama

And yes it is always 'in that order'.

To look deeper into the rankings, it's a matter of how several statistical points balance out among all the teams.  Let's look at the top ten offenses since all of the top schools rank high (except Ole Miss).  I haven't mastered the blogspot spreadsheet yet, so you have to scroll to get the whole picture.  The following shows the top ten offenses in order. 

The first number is the total score used to rank the offenses.  This is derived from the statistical points following, starting with Offensive Points Scored per game.  As you can see Baylor is the highest points scored per game for an offense after I weight it for opponents strength in that corresponding defensive category.  The scores range from 1.000 for the best and 0.0000 for the 128th ranked offense (Southern Methodist if you were wondering)  Also note that the score differential between the first and second teams (.004) isn't the same as the point differential between the second and the third teams (.003).  That is telling us that the Auburn's offensive points per game (weighted) is closer to that of Ohio State, than Ohio State is to Baylor.  The points allotted for each category isn't a linear even number given from one to one hundred twenty eight, it shows the relative strength of each team in that category when weighted for the opponents that team has faces thus far.  With the score for each category calculated, each score is weighted (this is the only subjective portion of this exercise) and totaled to give the final offensive score.

So while Auburn may lead the college world in yards per game, they do not stack up in all categories.  Also note the difference in total points between each of the top ten.  The difference between Oregon and Baylor is .015.  For the next three teams the difference is a minimum of .100  A rather large gap indeed when you consider that the gap between the five and ten teams is .150 in total.  So while Oregon and Baylor are essentially tied at the top (and are equally rewarded in this system for being a notch above) the next three are all noticeably less effective, with the final five in this list bunched together in the standings.

Along with Offensive Ranking there are four other Measures that go into the final overall ranking from week to week; including: Defensive Ranking, Special Teams Scoring differential, Team Record, and the Sloppy Index.

Anyway, I figured that given this unusual turn of events it might be worth while to show a little under the hood.  And why just looking at the offense and defense ranks isn't showing the whole picture.  And while Alabama and Georgia continue to preform in a manner that sets them above the rest, the other SEC teams are starting to fall off as they play out the schedule.  It really looks as if the Mississippi schools were paper tigers after all.

Finally this system is a reflection of a teams entire body of work, not just who's hot and who's not.  It takes more than one fluky game to push a team up or down at this time of year.  The total statistical accumulation of data over the first eleven games has made the teams essentially what they are.  Moving more than a slot or two in one week is a sign that things really were outside of what was to be expected from that team.
